The AIA 2030 Commitment uses CBECS 2003 (Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey) and RECS 2001 (Residential Energy Consumption Survey) as the baseline energy use intensity for whole building projects. Interiors projects are baselined against ASHRAE 90.1 2007 lighting power density (LPD) values. These baselines were set at the onset because they were the best available US data sets.

Experienced 2030 Commitment reporters recognize that there are different approaches to establishing baselines, which can cause confusion. The intent of this guide is to clearly define a recommended process for establishing baselines, and provide guidance for situations with particular challenges.

Step-by-step guide

To set up a project baseline:

  1. After completing the "Extended Project Data Section" click on "Configure Use Type".
  2. In the "Configure Your Use Type" section select use type, enter project area.
  3. In the "Baseline Energy Use" section, enter the baseline EUI and source if you have them. If you don't have the baseline and source, the system will import the baseline  from the Zero Tool.
  4. Click "Save & Continue" or "Save and complete later".
